Certified Oncology Nurses Recognized At Bayshore
Oncology Certified Nurses (OCNs) at Bayshore Community Hospital proudly display a plaque presented by the Oncology Nursing Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to the professional development of oncology nurses around the world, acknowledging the high percentage of oncology certified nurses on staff in the hospital’s new infusion suite, part of the oncology program at Bayshore.

"More than half of our RNs are nationally oncology certified nurses," says Nancy Salerno, RN, BC, BA, NE, OCN, director of Oncology Services.

"Our nurses are encouraged to improve their skills through education, mentoring, leadership experiences and teamwork. We support ongoing continuing education and support our nurses in achieving certification."

Currently, there are more than 27,000 oncology certified nurses nationwide. "Becoming an oncology certified nurse is a challenging task. To obtain certification, nurses must demonstrate experience and caring for patients with cancer as well as an in-depth knowledge of oncology nursing. Oncology certified nurses also value compassion and develop a deep sense of teamwork and job satisfaction," says Michael Kane, MD, FACP, medical director of the cancer program at Bayshore Community Hospital. "Working closely with our physicians, they bring not only excellent clinical but emotional care to enhance the healing environment valued by our patients and their families."
