Bayshore Participates In Pre-planning Drill to Save Lives
Joins with local fire companies to measure readiness for emergencies
On January 19, 2008, Holmdel Fire Company #1, Holmdel Fire and Rescue Company #2 and Hazlet Fire Company #1 were challenged by Bayshore Community Hospital’s Emergency Preparedness Committee to see if their equipment was capable of a rooftop evacuation that could reach over four stories.
Members of the Holmdel Office of Emergency Management, Holmdel Township Committeeman, Rocco Pascucci, M.D. and more than 37 firefighters began a drill that started at the Bayshore Community Hospital conference rooms with a presentation by Bill Brookes, corporate safety officer at Bayshore as well as a volunteer firefighter in Holmdel, that described the building characteristics, fire protection systems and operational hazards that are in and around Bayshore Hospital.
After the classroom session was completed, tours of both the inside and outside of Bayshore Hospital were given. Both Holmdel and Hazlet Fire Chiefs talked about where they wanted to set-up and position the 100 ft. tower platform of Holmdel Fire Co. and the 75 ft aerial platform of Hazlet Fire Co. The Holmdel Township Chief supervised and witnessed the equipment’s capabilities on all four sides of the building. They practiced setting up the trucks for operations, fully extending the ladders for accessibility to the different levels of the roof, placing the platform from the roof to the ground level and other maneuvers.
The fire fighters and line officers concluded the drill with information on the amount of safety equipment, locations for setting up equipment, dependent upon the type of emergency. The drill proved successful, and determined that the Holmdel Fire Co. Tower Platform is ready and able to reach above the fourth floor roof. Hazlet Fire Co. equipment is able to reach other lower elevations for fire fighting and evacuation purposes.
Bayshore Community Health Services’ Emergency Management Committee consists of staff in multi-disciplinary departments that are proactive and set forth plans to manage emergency scenarios by performing various disaster drills both internally and with the communities it serves.
